DOX – Jazz, Electronics, and the Art of Spontaneous Sound

Dee Byrne, alto sax, effects
Oli Kuster, modular synths, electric piano
Xavier Kaeser, drums
Swiss keyboardist Oli Kuster and UK saxophonist Dee Byrne have long explored the fringes of jazz, blurring genre boundaries with the Swiss/UK combo MoonMot. In their duo project DOX, they push further into uncharted territory, merging jazz with modular electronics to create fractured ambient landscapes, free improvisation, and glitch-laden beats.
The project was born during the pandemic when Kuster began experimenting with modular synths, laying down raw, dissonant tracks that would form the backbone of the duo’s sound. Collaborating with Swiss guitarist Cyrill Ferrari, they released two albums as Motherboard Pinball via Efpi Records, building a unique sonic world of textural depth and fluid improvisation. Now, with Berlin-based drummer Xavier Kaeser joining the fold, DOX expands its scope, delivering seven new tracks due for release in October 2025. Each piece on the album reflects their in-the-moment group improvisation ethos, straddling ambient electronics, intense jazz phrasing, and unpredictable rhythms
DOX continues to redefine jazz, pulling elements of free improv, electronic experimentation, and a raw, live energy into a singular vision. The result is an album that revels in unpredictability while maintaining a keen sense of sonic exploration.
